In a dimly lit college computer lab, an old friend of mine, Markus, embarked on an unconventional journey. Over the course of five years, he injected cryptojackers and miners into lab computers, discreetly earning an extra $800 a month, sometimes more, while paying his college fees from their own pocket. This tale of ingenious cryptojacking unveiled the hidden world of cryptocurrencies for me, setting the stage for us to explore how computers are being covertly used to mine cryptocurrency. Wtf is Cryptojacking?
Cryptojacking is like a sneaky computer game where the cybercriminals secretly use your computer to earn virtual money (cryptocurrency) without asking your permission. They make your computer work hard, and you might not even know it. It can slow down your computer and use up your electricity.
Cryptojacking can be easily carried out through following file types:
- JavaScript Code (malicious websites runs in browsers)
- Browser Extensions (untrusted sources impersonating legitimate add-ons)
- Executable Files (email attachments, downloads)
- PDF Documents (attachments or downloads)
- Microsoft Office Documents (containing macros in mail attachments)
- ZIP/RAR Archives (concealing malware in downloaded files)
- Images (Steganography) (hidden code embedded in shared images)
- Shortcut Files (.lnk) (mostly along downloaded files)
- Java Applets (exploiting vulnerabilities in web browser)
- Batch/Script Files (background running malicious scripts with attachments)
